Uttarakhand Destination: Uttarakhand is state in India in north. Located on the south side on Himalayan mountain range near Uttar Pradesh and Himachal State of India. More than 80 % area of Uttarakhand is mountain area and more than 60 % is forest. Some of the highest mountains within India is located here in Uttarakhand like Nanda Devi (7816 mtrs high from sea level) and Kamet (7756 mtrs high from sea level). In east it has Nepal while west it has Himachal Pradesh. Uttarakhand is mainly divided in Garhwal (07 Districts) and Kumaon (6 Districts). Current capitol is Derhadun which is also the biggest city in Uttarakhand. In future Gairsain can also become Gairsain due to ongoing debate.
Known as Uttarkuru in ancient time around 06th Century BCE. Kunindas were first big dynasty to rule in 2nd Century BCE. Presence of Buddhist population can be understood by historic data (During the time of Great King Ashoka). Between 7th Century to 12th Century it was under the Katyuri Kings. It became known as Kurmanchal at that time. Around 14th Century King Ajay Pal created Garhwal Kingdom with merger of many areas. During 1803 to 1814 Nepali Gorkhas was ruling here after war. Gorkha Army defeated by Garhwal – Birtish Joint Army. Due to partnership many area came under the British while other areas remained under King of Garhwal. Kingdom capitol was shifted from Srinagar to Tehri and Later to Narendra Nagar in 1919. In August 1949 King Manvendra Shah merged Tehri Riyasat with Independent India and became part of Uttarakhand State of India. Uttarakhand means “Northern Land” in Sankrit. Also described as Kedarkhand and Manaskhand in Skand Puran. Many important events from Hindu epics of Mahabharat and Ramayan took place here due to which many temples were built across the state. Apart from that Famous Guru Adi Shankaracharya visited this area and revived many places / temple across the state.
Uttarakhand has area of 20,000 square miles. Most of the northern part of the state is Himalayan mountains covered in snow / bare rocks. Wide range of geographic conditions are experienced in Uttarakhand like Glaciers in northern Uttarakhand at Himalaya while plains of Ganga River, Forest and Grasslands. In population of approx. 10 million 51% is male while 29 % is female in Uttarakhand. 69 % of population living in rural areas. Garhwali and Kumaoni is largest ethnic groups in Uttarakhand while it is also home to tribes like Bhotiya, Jaunsari, Jad, Thari, Buksa etc. Hindu Religion is biggest religious group with more than 80 % population followed by Islam (13 %). Hindi is widely spoked with more than 40 % along with Garhwali (23 %) and Kumaoni (20 %).

Auli is Skiing destination and also often host Skiing competitions. Nainital, Dehradun & Pauri is making its way to Paragliding destinations. Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers which is open for very short period attracts Sikh pilgrims as well as nature lovers in the rain months of July August. Tourism numbers is unbelievably high during the Kanwar Mela (Sawan Month of Hindu calendar each year) at Haridwar and Rishikesh. Apart from these every 12 year Kumbh Mela is organized at Haridwar which attract roughly above 15 million pilgrims in duration of 4 months from all over the world.
